To explain how counselling can help firstly I will explain further my modality of therapy.
I work in a Person-Centred approached which was fathered by Carl Rogers who believed that by creating the correct setting the client could feel safe to explore their thoughts and feelings in a deeper and more meaningful way to them. He thus created the core principles of person-centred counselling, which are, Empathy, unconditional positive regard (being non-judgemental) and congruence (genuineness and honesty). Within this modality of counselling the client is the expert in the room and the counsellor is there to act as a sound board and emotional support as the client goes through what is challenging them in order to find a greater sense of self and validation.
My practice of counselling works for those who are truly ready to dig deep into what has been troubling them and the way I can help is to listen, emotional hold the client through tough exploration and sound back key elements of the client's narrative in order to help them recognise certain things that may have been missed in the past. The main focus will be on the client to bring whatever they want to session and my modality allows the client to be the focal voice within each appointment. I have adapted my practice for psychoeducational sessions on topics I feel may be useful to the client and these are generally agreed upon first by the two of us. My psychoeducational sessions are there for educational purpose only and to help the client increase their self-awareness and hopefully self-compassion as most of these sessions are built around self-concept and self-esteem theory in accordance to what Carl Rogers theorized. I have adapted some of these for Neurodivergent clients to include challenges with socializing and masking.
If you are looking for therapy that is counsellor lead you may be interested in other modalities of counselling such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as Person- Centred Counselling does require the client to be the main voice in the room. If you are looking for that validation and a safe, warm space to vent and find true meaning in what has challenged you so far then please get in touch.
